Remittances are a crucial source of foreign exchange for many countries, including India. They refer to the money sent by migrants to their home countries. Over the years, global remittance patterns have evolved, influenced by economic shifts, migration trends, and labor market dynamics.
Understanding these changes helps in assessing their impact on national economies and future financial trends.
In 2024, India set a new global record by receiving "$129.1 billion" in remittances, the highest amount ever received by any country in a single year. This accounted for "14.3% of total global remittance flows", reaffirming India’s position as the world’s top recipient of money sent by its diaspora.
According to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) latest survey, the United States has emerged as the top contributor to India's remittance inflows. The share of remittances from the U.S. rose from 23.4% in 2020-21 to 27.7% in 2023-24.
