Dr. Kerry Kriger Teaches Indian Classical Music on Bamboo Flute
http://bansuribliss.com
In this video, Dr. Kerry Kriger plays his bansuri (bamboo flute) with Sa at F (Sa is 3 holes closed). Dr. Kriger teaches how to play murki, which is an important type of ornamentation to give a note more expression. He introduces the 7-note scale called Kalyan, which is used as the basis of Yaman, a very well-known evening raga (melody). He also introduces the use of the 7th hole to play teevra ma (the sharp 4th).
Here is the scale of Kalyan:
SRGMPDNS arohi (up)
SNDPMGRS avarohi (down)
S = Sa
R = Re
G = Ga
M = Teevra Ma
P = Pa
D = Dha
N = Ni
S = Sa (in this case high Sa, an octave above Sa)
Note that in handwritten notation, Teevra Ma is written differently. it is written as an M with a vertical bar like this | rising from its top, which cannot be easily replicated on a computer).

Dr. Kriger's F flute is actually at F +8 (slightly sharper than standard F). The tanpura in the background is playing Pa Sa Sa Sa (low Pa, Sa Sa, low Sa) via iTablaPro iOS app. Video made on an iPad mini. Recorded March 28, 2015 in San Francisco, CA
