I’m working with Hannes today from Bee alive, he infact invited me to join him on this removal, I love working with more experienced beekeepers as it is an opportunity to chat about our hives and removals

I highly recommend being part of a community of beekeepers because we can all learn from each other.

In this removal we have a unique challenge. The homeowner has been storing formed polystyrene cubes and had also sprayed a loose polystyrene all over the ceiling which we will be lying in as the crawl space is limited.

When wild honey bees are left alone and not relocated early after they find a location, the nest will continue to grow for years.

In favourable conditions a colony can expand the nest by 2 to 4 square meters a year if the space allows for it.

Bearing in mind if the comb is not being used to store honey or pollen then the queen will be assessing if it is suitable to lay in and increasing the number of worker bees exponentially.

Before we can get onto the nest we have to move large quantities of the polystyrene over to another area of the crawl space so we could bring up all our gear.

Because we are working in the middle of winter we are not finding a lot of honey. A spring removal of a nest like this can produce large quantities of honey. But there is enough to make our hands sticky and with all the lose polystyrene it is becoming a messy job.

All the bees are vacuumed into Hannes custom built bee vacuum and the brood comb is placed in a insulated box to be transported and kept warm so it can be placed in the hive the bees will occupy.

We pack a wooly roof insulation substance against the roof to prevent a new swarm from finding this location and making it home. The bee build from the top and are unable to build on this material.
