Hunger Strike: Goa Erupts in Protest Over Land Law Changes

Описание: Goa is witnessing massive street protests and a prolonged hunger strike by Viresh Borkar over changes to the Goa Town and Country Planning Act.

At the centre of the controversy is Section 39A, introduced in February 2024, which allows the Chief Town Planner to change land zones after a 30-day public notice. This includes converting orchard or natural cover land into settlement zones, while excluding eco-sensitive areas.

Critics say the law gives sweeping powers to the government and allege that large areas of land have already been approved for conversion. The issue has led to political tensions, with Town Planning Minister Vishwajit Rane and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at the centre of the debate.
