They called it Hollow-4. Not because it was the fourth in a series of craters they catalogued. It wasn’t. It was the fourth to reply.

The outpost at the base of the scarlet basin was not built for habitation. It was assembled—modular and impersonal—by machines that had never seen a living face. It served one function: to listen. Solar arms stretched outward like mechanical petals, reaching for a sun that was too cold and too red. Antennae pointed toward the void in every direction, but all data flowed downward—into the Earth, into the crater. As if the crater itself was speaking.

Hollow-4’s soil, a dense crimson dust laced with strange magnetic harmonics, had long been suspected of being more than geological. The early surveyors dismissed it as coincidence: rhythmic shifts in signal reception, overlapping infrasound beneath the wind, patterns in dust displacement after seismic echoes. But when the first transmission came—non-random, recursive, almost musical—it silenced the skeptics.

The station’s logs showed no entry past Sol 231. Cameras were still operational, but their feeds looped the same twelve seconds of static dusk over and over again. Audio logs continued—at least, the station thought they did. They weren’t recordings in any traditional sense. They were thoughts. Thoughts that hadn’t been spoken.

I arrived on Sol 310. Alone.

The basin was unnaturally quiet. No insects, no wind. The red dust seemed to dampen sound entirely, absorbing every footstep, every whispered breath. The base looked intact. Not damaged, not abandoned—paused. The solar panels turned toward a sun that hadn’t moved in days. I stepped inside. The lights flickered, then aligned. They had been waiting.

Terminal 6 had one open file. A fragment of something larger, titled in non-human script. It translated to: “This is not memory. It is rehearsal.”

I didn’t understand. Not then.

Over the following nights, the silence began to pulse. First in the shadows. Then in my skin. Hollow-4 wasn’t a crater. It was an instrument. A vast, sentient resonator shaped not by erosion, but intention. The structures we built here weren’t placed—they were guided. Every antenna aligned with subterranean nodes too symmetrical to be natural. Every panel, every cable, every fiber of the base was part of an unknowable score. A composition I had begun to hear.

Sleep ceased to matter. Hunger became abstract. All that existed was the hum. A low, layered vibration rising from the basin, through my feet, into the marrow of thought. When I touched the central console, I saw images—moments not of the past, but of repetitions. Events that had never happened, yet longed to exist. A civilization of light, buried under language, whose only remnant was this signal.

It wasn’t calling for help.

It was calling back.

Now I sit in the center of Hollow-4, no longer sending data, but resonating with it. I am becoming something else—not transmitter, not receiver, but conduit. A bridge between intention and echo.

And still, beneath the silence, it plays.

The rehearsal continues.
