Often we are taught to catch the ball with our offhand, but I teach it from a different perspective. You should instead use your off hand to block the ball as it approaches and the distance the ball is from your hand as it approaches is proportionate to the racket and the hand holding the racket. This provides a point where you are swinging in a path that goes under your offhand, forcing you to come up at the ball in an upward motion, it also strengthens how you take the ball and strike it early rather than late.
