The East African Legislative assembly has honoured the First Ladies of the founding presidents of the East African Community. This was during a special sitting of the assembly in Arusha, Tanzania. Miria Kalule Obote, the wife of former Ugandan President Milton Obote, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, the wife of former Kenyan President Jomo Kenyatta, attended the session in person. But Maria Nyerere, the wife of former Tanzanian President Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, was represented by one of her sons.
