Making a Roughout Wallet from Scrap Leather
Roughout leather is simply leather used with the flesh side facing out. It's used mostly in boots, as scratches are easily buffed out of the flesh side of the hide while the grain is kept intact for strength. The roughout style is perfect for small scrap leather craft projects that might have some markings on the grain or be a little imperfect - bite and pock scars are actually stronger than clean grain leather, but they're not always pretty! By facing the grain of leather inside to hide the marks, you can make beautiful long lasting leather goods from your less-than-perfect scraps :) Here make use of the edges of a beautiful Hermann Oak Vegetable Tanned leather hide to make a fun snapping bifold wallet in the roughout style - it's a really fun style to try out!
