For the third consecutive year, India topped the global doping offenders list with 260 positive cases in 2024, showing a positivity rate of 3.6%, the highest among nations conducting over 5,000 tests. Compared to countries like China (0.2%), France (91 cases), and the US (1.1%), India’s doping issue is far more severe, driven by pressures to win medals, a “medal-at-all-costs” mindset, and low awareness of health risks. Doping has spread beyond elite sports, affecting junior and collegiate athletes, which threatens India’s sporting credibility and Olympic ambitions and calls for a systemic overhaul of sports governance.
2. GI-Tagged Indi Lime from Karnataka Enters Oman Market with First Export Shipment
GI-tagged Indi Lime from Vijayapura, Karnataka has entered the Oman market with its first export shipment of 3 metric tonnes, boosting India’s agricultural exports. As part of market diversification, an additional 350 kg of Indi Lime was also flagged off for export to the United Kingdom, taking total district exports to nearly 12.35 metric tonnes. This export milestone gains importance following the India–Oman CEPA/FTA, which aims to strengthen bilateral trade and enhance market access for Indian agricultural products.
3. Tamil Nadu Government Launches Otter Conservation Initiative in Cauvery Basin
The Tamil Nadu government has launched a special conservation initiative to protect the smooth-coated otter, a Vulnerable species found in the Cauvery river delta. The programme focuses on studying otter populations, improving habitats, and reducing human–otter conflict with fishing communities. Covering parts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Cuddalore, the project is led by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department with support from research institutions. This initiative highlights the importance of conserving freshwater ecosystems and protecting indicator species critical for ecological balance.
