Trailering a horse can be overwhelming but it doesn't have to be. Once you have the right trailer for your horse, practice. Don't wait for a trip. Get your horse comfortable with the trailer, gear, and loading/unloading process before it's time to hit the road.
A few key safety measures to remember:
1. Don't walk behind your horse when entering the trailer
2. Hook the trailer up to the towing vehicle before loading your horse.
3. Use a trailer tie and breakaway halter
Our star "Michael Bolton" is a natural when it comes to trailering, but what if you have a horse that's a little more difficult?
Ask for help. Talk to others with experience.
Show your horse an example by recruiting a horse who's a good shipper to show your horse how it's done.
Practice working through tight obstacles in groundwork exercises.
Make the trailer comfortable by providing hay, bedding and ample airflow.
Train consistently by practicing several times close to when you plan to leave.
Trailering is a necessary skill for any horse. Whether you’re loading for a visit to the vet or a trip to a show, it’s important to take your time, exercise caution, and remain calm. Some horses may need to practice loading and unloading more than others, but with the proper training and encouragement, your horse can be a shipping pro in no time!
