This track was originally conceived as a musical response to a story about loss and longing in a child losing their parents. It was inspired by a beautiful track called “Trumpets of Jericho” by the BibleCode Sundays. An incredible song that talks about young Irish boys being forced to fight in a war that was never theirs to fight. 🇮🇪

Over time it has evolved as I and the rest of the world continue to see the horrors of war unfold across the earth and the utterly unthinkable, devastating impact it has on the people who have the least control over it all: children. 💔

The track focuses on the juxtaposition between evacuation being “branded” by the British Government as a “holiday” nearly 100 years ago, whilst children in 2026 continue to live in squalor, fear, poverty, terror and hunger as a result of war. As someone who works to uphold the pillars of the UNCRC each day, not only as a parent but as a practitioner, I cannot put into words what I feel about how children in war torn countries are left with NOTHING, yet still manage to smile. Every child has rights and for far too many, these are scarcely upheld, considered or valued.

The title “Small Shoulders” felt like the only appropriate title. Little people so small and helpless should not have to carry the burdens, responsibilities and issues of adults, and suffer the very real and harrowing consequences…and yet, nearly 100 years on from WWII, its still happening across the world whilst western children squabble on tiktok/snapchat and obsess over material nonsense. We need to do better. Fuck knows how with the idiots in charge, but charities like UNICEF are doing everything they can to protect the most vulnerable. Please donate what you can.
