My nephew and I sat and observed the awesomeness of the Kananaskis river at the Widow Maker; the first rapid on the lower Kananaskis river. The Widow Maker is where the Kananaskis river drops through a gap in the rock shelf forming random whirlpools and boils.
The name Widow Maker originates from the early logging days; the days before the mighty Kananaskis river was harnessed by the Barrier lake dam. The logs used to get hung up at this particular gap in the rock shelf. Many lives were lost to men clearing the trees away and that is how this rapid gained it's name.
