The Jewish community that lived in Portugal in 1496 was the strongest and most educated in the world at that time. The age-old history of the Jewish community in the the territories that today are Portugal and Spain is an impressive one. Although a tiny minority, the Jewish community greatly contributed to the prosperity of the successive kingdoms that were established there.
Currently Portugal is witnessing a process of historical reparation together with the return of Jewish life and Jewish culture. The Portuguese Jewish community is building Museums and archives of the history of Jews of Portuguese origin dispersed throughout the world, producing films, bringing back to the country many books that had been stolen from Portuguese Jews in 1496 and 1497, and it paid for the processing and digitization of the files of the Portuguese Inquisition, which were in danger of rotting and being lost forever.
Jews must never leave the teaching of their history in anyone else’s hands but their own.
