Created in 1962 by Italian comic writers Angela and Luciana Giussani, Diabolik launched the influential fumetti neri (“black comics”) movement before being adapted into the cult 1968 film Danger: Diabolik, directed by legendary Italian filmmaker Mario Bava (Blood and Black Lace) and starring John Phillip Law (Death Rides a Horse). Set somewhere in Europe, the film follows master thief Diabolik and his glamorous accomplice Eva Kant (Marisa Mell) as they outwit Inspector Ginko (Michel Piccoli), stealing millions in cash, priceless emeralds, and twenty tons of gold while humiliating the police and the state. A key entry in the cycle of 1960s European supervillain crime films—alongside Fantômas and Dr Mabuse—Danger: Diabolik stands as one of Mario Bava’s most visually audacious works.
