Continuous infusion chemotherapy delivered via a portable, "takeaway" pump, often referred to as an elastomeric pump or a "ball pump", has become a common treatment for many cancers, particularly for colorectal and gastrointestinal malignancies. Modern takeaway pumps allow long tedious inpatient infusions to be done as an outpatient. After an initial "loading dose" at an infusion center, the patient is connected to a lightweight, non-electric device that uses the pressure of a collapsing internal balloon to deliver the medication at a precise, pre-set flow rate. This allows the patient to return home, sleep in their own bed, and go about their daily activities while the device quietly handles the infusion over 24 hours to 7 days. The shift toward at-home infusion is driven by both clinical efficacy and patient quality of life. Research indicates that continuous infusion often maintains more stable drug levels in the bloodstream compared to a single large "bolus" injection, which can reduce certain side effects and improve the overall effectiveness of the treatment. Furthermore, removing the need for multi-day hospital stays reduces the risk of hospital-acquired infections and significantly lowers the psychological burden of treatment. Once the pump is empty, the patient simply returns to the clinic for a brief "disconnect" appointment or, in some cases, learns to remove the device themselves. While patients must be mindful of the pump, keeping it at a specific temperature and ensuring the tubing does not kink, the autonomy it provides is a major advancement in making cancer care more manageable and less disruptive to normal life.
