The Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, which enshrines the saint's remains, is located on a hill known as the “Colle dell’Inferno.” Francis passed away in the Portiuncula church on the evening of October 3, 1226. His body was quickly taken within the walls of Assisi and buried in the Chapel of San Giorgio, now part of the Basilica of St. Clare and known as the Chapel of the Crucifix. In spring 1227, the Colle dell’Inferno was donated to Pope Gregory IX, who ordered the construction of a basilica to house St. Francis’ body. Work commenced in summer 1227, and by late May 1230, Francis' remains were formally transferred to the new Basilica and placed beneath the main altar. The Pope designated the Basilica as the “Caput et Mater” [Head and Mother] of the entire Order of Friars Minor.
