Описание: What if some of our fiercest public debates are being shaped not by lies, but by simple mathematical misunderstandings? In this talk, Dr Lisa Tompson reveals how using the wrong denominator - a basic statistical comparison - can dramatically distort our picture of racial disparities in policing. When bad numbers enter public debate, they don’t just fuel controversy; they erode trust in policing and the State, reinforce harmful stereotypes, and risk derailing meaningful reform. Lisa leads one of the world’s largest evidence-mapping projects on disparities in policing, reviewing more than 500 studies across multiple countries. Her work sits at the intersection of crime science, public policy, and data ethics, and she is known for translating complex research into accessible insights for policymakers, journalists, and communities. This talk invites viewers to approach policing debates with more curiosity, more caution, and a deeper commitment to truth. . This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
