The best way to live life is to see the past as coincidence meaning what’s done is done, and present as choice, because this is the moment where you live and where your actions truly matter and decide what to do next.
However, what many of us do is quite the opposite – we keep replaying the past, regretting what can’t be changed, which brings us nothing but regret and despair. Similarly, we see present as coincidence – something that just happens to us — instead of something we actively shape, which harbors nothing but laziness.
So, staying fully in present, visualizing past as coincidence, and treating future as a mix of both or just something which has yet to unfold is one of the best things we can do.
Although, true wisdom lies in seeing our actions as coincidence and coincidence as the result of those actions. What this truly does is not only liberate ourselves from the guilt of our past actions but also break the shackles of “I AM THE DOER” mentality.
It helps us act without the burden of ego or guilt — doing what must be done, yet knowing that outcomes are not entirely in our hands. That’s where real peace begins: when action flows through you, but not essentially from you. Through this, we uplift ourselves a bit and move to a state of more peace and calm.
Now, if we go a bit deeper, we realize that the actions we perform originate from our consciousness, which in turn symbolizes our knowledge, will, and drive.
A perfect balance of all three is a rare find. Most of us have one dominant aspect - for some, it is knowledge, while for some it is will and for many it is the drive to act. When knowledge overpowers, we become thinkers who never act. When will dominates, we turn rigid and ego-driven, forcing outcomes without clarity. And when drive leads without the guidance of knowledge or will, we act impulsively, often losing direction.
Now, in order to hit a middle ground or strike a chord in between these three aspects of our consciousness, we need to reach a higher state of awareness. Awareness allows us to observe when one aspect begins to dominate the others.
But the real question is that how do we attain this awareness.
And the answer to this question somewhat lies in our discussion above – by seeing our actions as coincidence and coincidence as the outcome of those actions. Yet, this thought alone can’t stand on its own against our minds. Our minds are very strong and tend to slip back into ego — taking credit when things go right and blaming itself when they don’t.
To stay centered, we need something greater than reason to anchor us. That anchor is devotion — surrendering our sense of doership to the Divine.
When we dedicate our actions, thoughts, and even our intentions to a higher consciousness, awareness stops being a mental effort and becomes a natural state. Devotion transforms our attitude from ‘I am doing this’ to ‘Let this be done through me.’ It humbles the ego and refines the will, aligning it with truth instead of personal desire.
And this is what Krishna states in the Bhagwat Gita
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।
मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि॥
