This transcription of A Star in the Morning Star is the crown jewel of my craft so far. It took two agonising years of on-and-off work: I began in July 2019 when Three Houses had just been released, and added my final touches just in time for its second anniversary. In the beginning, I’d only heard the track through data-mine leaks and thought it would be pretty cool for V2R to play, after our Link’s Awakening mashup video. I didn’t know anything about it so I gave my transcription the working title “Is this the credit roll? Sure sounds like it”.

Rei Kondoh’s computer had churned out some pretty opaque, monolithic orchestration with lots of reverb and filtering, which was equally exciting and demotivating to translate into piano trio. It was just impossible to get it to a standard I would accept, so A Star got sidelined for more feasible projects. Like our Super Mario Galaxy album.

By the time we finished “Into the Galaxy”, the three of us had become pretty good at confronting pieces that just don’t sound right when you remove something that you can’t replicate in a piano trio. Incidentally, I’d also discovered Sally Beamish’s transcription of Debussy’s La Mer for Trio Apaches. Beamish explained that the impossible started writing itself once she gave up on trying to reproduce Debussy’s orchestration and started writing idiomatically for trio. With new confidence, I told Hana last June that I wanted to start over with A Star, and the journey was finally over by July.

This is a pretty faithful transcription of A Star, although I couldn’t resist adding echoes of The Edge of Dawn, The Apex of the World and the Song of the Nabateans! The original has a juggernaut of a buildup towards the end, which I sought to honour with a suitable ending instead of the sad loop back to near the beginning. I found it in the closing bars of Ravel’s Trio, a piece close to my heart and which I’ve performed the most in the repertoire. What a treat.

Finally, a special shoutout to Hana and Helaine who recorded their parts separately yet still managed to retain that feeling of us being close together. The end product isn’t perfect to say the least but it’s wild that we can share this with all of you. Thank you so much for your support!
