This documentary follows the progress of a four-year-old deaf-blind boy as he learns to navigate his environment with the assistance of a physical therapist. It highlights his journey from needing significant support to achieving greater independence.
• Initial struggles: The boy initially requires extensive help to walk and sit, often losing balance and struggling with basic movements.
• Therapist's approach: The physical therapist begins by teaching him how to walk using a gait trainer and two-hand guide. She lacks knowledge of specific orientation strategies for deaf-blind children, but she knows she has to begin by getting him to walk independently, first. She gets him a Pediatric Belt Cane and begins working with him every day.
• Progress over time: After six weeks, he shows improvement by standing and walking independently with his Pediatric Belt Cane, demonstrating better navigation skills.
Year later advancements: A year later, he confidently walks down the school hallway, stands independently, and exhibits improved mobility with verbal prompts, though these prompts are not ideal for his needs.
