http://www.MemphisAstro.org. In this episode of Telescope Tips, Keith Latiolais discusses the 3 types of cameras he uses for astrophotography.
1. DSLR- Cannon 60Da. From Cannon: "The EOS 60Da features a specially tailored infrared blocking filter that allows the light normally blocked by a typical DSLR's filter to be captured by the camera's sensor... With its modified infrared blocking filter, the EOS 60Da captures approximately 3x the hydrogen-alpha than the original EOS 60D".
2. ZWO ASI-1224MC: A CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor). Generally they have a smaller pixel size, limitations on Binning, but generally much less expensive, and the quality of CMOS has come a long in recent years. Used primarily for planetary imaging (Jupiter, Saturn, Mars). This one has a pretty small chip so it can be difficult getting the object framed. It records in video format which is then processed in a software program (AutoStakkert, RegiStax). Sometimes I can take as many as 5000 frames in one video (maybe 6 minutes or so) and then stack them together for one image.
3. Atik 414EX OSC: A CCD (Charge Coupled Device), is a "One Shot Color" (OSC). As with any astro camera with a color chip, because of the Bayer matrix the sensivity is much less than a monochrome with filters, but its a trade-off with time. Because it's OCS I take fewer subs, again with overall less sensitivity.
Part 2 of 3.
