COMMENT
In terms of the performance this is probably my favourite of the 8 Japanese Lovesexy '89 shows - in terms of quality it most certainly isn't. Throughout the first half of the recording the show is barely audible and what little you can hear is very faint - it's muffled, echoed and extremely thin. The second half of the recording is a slight improvement, but still far below average and very murky with a heavy dose of (an admittedly vocal) Japanese audience. It's undoubtedly a superior show to the first Tokyo concert (HERE) with a number of very unusual moments and genuine surprises. 'A Love Bizarre' is very lengthy with various call-and-responses with the crowd and includes the "Fellas, I'm back..." line from 'Murph Drag'. This is followed by Prince singing 'Happy Birthday' to the Japanese tour promoter Mr. Udo prior to 'When You Were Mine' during which Prince's guitar appears to fail - one of a couple of technical faults during the show. The piano medley is the undoubted highlight and includes 2 rare performances - firstly of 'International Lover' (no matter how brief) and 'Free' - and again a portion of 'Chopsticks' is played. 'When Doves Cry' unusually doesn't feature the barking dog sample towards the end - the Lovesexy geek in me noted that omission. The show closes with '1999' (no 'Alphabet St.' encore) and the recording includes what appears to be a PA announcement in Japanese. Unfortunately the quality of the recording, and in particular the first half of the show, means that once again the quality of the concert is far superior to the recording and the majority of people would have a hard time sitting through this - let alone enjoying it.
