Communities, subcultures, underground movements and activists have long taken the representation and preservation of their activities into their own hands, resisting prevailing power structures or institutional indifference.
While the act of a community archiving itself may not be new, the online world has offered an unprecedented opportunity to bring together and make visible movements which may have been misrepresented, misunderstood or simply not noticed by existing archival structures, to create a space where these communities can simultaneously document, exhibit, engage and - even unintentionally - archive themselves.
This session explores this work while asking how an institution such as the BFI can address this historic under-representation, and what the ethics, responsibilities and lessons are when acquiring such an expression of community identity.
