As a dog owner, we all dread the day that our dog’s life ends, and as someone who’s experienced the loss of one of the best dogs ever, it’s the worst thing to ever happen in my life. BUT, there are ways that us, as owners, can proactively help our dog’s live a longer life, and don’t forget to watch til the end because the the last tip might surprise you!
1. Healthy weight/diet — This one is so often overlooked it’s actually concerning. Having an overweight dog is NOT CHONKY or cute, it’s actually animal abuse! Obesity is one of the highest causes of death in dogs because it comes with so many health problems, and usually its from overfeeding and a bad diet. So, you should always strive to give your dog the healthiest diet so he can live nice and long. On top of keeping dogs at a healthy weight, a diet should also be balanced in terms of nutritional value. Check the ingredients of the dog food you buy, or if you feed raw make sure you’re balancing the meals, and you can always go to a dog nutrition expert to get some advice.
2. Mental Exercise — Just like humans, dogs need to stay sharp in the brain to stay youthful and live longer! This isn’t as hard as you might think, you can mentally stimulate your dog through enrichment games like food puzzles and scent work, dog sports which is amazing also physically, and obedience training.
3. Physical Exercise — Again, we can just compare a dog’s lifespan and health to a human - think of a human that goes to the gym four times a week versus someone that doesn’t — we need to keep our dogs active to live a long life! Depending on the breed, you need to be exercising your dog every single day anywhere from one 30 minute walk a day to a few hours — Rover has a good daily exercise calculator for your dog that I’ll link in the description! With a Border Aussie, I exercise Mochi anywhere from 2 to 4 hours every single day. https://www.rover.com/uk/blog/how-muc...

4. Minimize Stress — Stress is like a silent killers for dogs, and a huge way we can extend their lives is by minimizing it as much as we can. It’s the little things like having a chaotic home with toddlers or something that can really stress out your dog — if you are in a situation with a crazy home with either kids running around or guests over all the time, make sure your dog has his own private space like either a crate or a little nook in the home. Also, if you and the other people in your home travel often and have to leave your dog alone many times a year, I would reconsider even getting a dog because those events can cause extreme stress for your dog.
5. Dental Health — Everyone always tells people to brush their dog’s teeth but so many people don’t because they don’t realize how important it is to extending a dog’s lifespan! Dangerous bacteria and decay in the teeth doesn’t actually just affect your dog’s oral health, but it actually can lead to health issues in the rest of the body, usually in the heart and kidneys. So, just strive to brush your dog’s teeth at least once or twice a week, and then move up to 3 or 4 times if you can!
6. Routine Vet Visits — Catching potential illnesses or health issues or even weight problems early is key to extending your dog’s life by as much as you can, and to do that you need to go regularly to the vet! Obviously, if your dog has preexisting health issues, you’ll have to go more frequently than a completely healthy, young dog. But, as a rule of thumb, you should be scheduling vet visits once a year at minimum for a general checkup and any vaccinations or boosters for a fully grown dog, and more often for a puppy, but your vet will tell you when to come back when they’re a puppy. But, don’t be afraid to check in with the vet if you notice any irregular signs in your dog — early catching is key!
7. Be FINANCIALLY Prepared for the Worst — THIS is the tip I feel like most people don’t consider enough and it’s really frustrating and sad to see! Too often, there’s people who can’t afford the treatments for dog’s illnesses and devastatingly, the dog passes away to the illness. BEFORE even getting a dog, everybody should prepare for the absolute worst financially — my boyfriend and I have a savings fund just for Mochi for the future in case he needs ANY type of emergency surgery or treatment which I think every dog owner should consider when trying to extend our dogs’ years on this earth.
