Today, it is a long journey from Kalpa to Kaza of 9 hours. Once you leave Kalpa and enter the district Spiti and Lahaul, the landscape changes completely. You see dry reddish-brown mountains eroeded cliffs over time, white rocks, as it starts to feel like you are not on earth anymore but somewhere on Moon or Mars. That is why, Spiti sometimes called as 'Moonland' and 'Marsland'. This road is all about the journey. The time you spend on these roads becomes one of the best times of your life. At places, this road is dangerous with narrow spaces and multiple landslides that breaks the roads and cliffs.
We took our lunch at Nako, and had Dal Chawal or Rajma Chawala with some Achaar and believe me, that was one of the best desi food I ever had. After the break, our target was to reach Tabo Monastery before 3.30pm as it closes early in winters. We reached there by 3.30pm and got the chance to see a 1,000 years old monastery still intact in its original structure.
Tabo Monastery, the "Ajanta of the Himalayas," is a 1,000-year-old Buddhist complex in Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, founded in 996 AD by Rinchen Zangpo for King Yeshe-Ö, renowned for its ancient murals, frescoes, and stucco sculptures, and is India's oldest continuously operating Buddhist enclave, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)
