EPISODE 42: Beige Blind Bidding features a review and tutorial of an old-school Leo Colovini game from 2000 called Doge. This is a quirky blind bidding game where players cast secret votes in elections. If they win the elections, they get to manipulate things on the board. Ultimately, players are racing to build palaces faster than their opponents. They will bluff, bid, and shift their pieces around in an effort to gain the slightest edge over their opponents. It's a unique game worth discovering, even if only for its charm & personality.

ADVISORS: I wish I would have showcased the power of the advisors & how they affect the dynamic of the game. Getting that 1 extra vote somewhere is often a game changer, and the timing of when the elections happen is crucial because you can place an advisor somewhere an election has not yet happened. I wish I would've focused more on that part of the game. One of the best parts of Doge is how the elections are not settled until they actually score. The blind bids are 1 thing, but the constant maneuvering of advisors can drastically change the outcome of an election. If you take an advisor, there's a lot to consider: Should you shore up your votes somewhere, even though you have no idea what your opponents bid? That could be a waste, or maybe it's the one vote you need to secure the victory. Should you place the advisor in an empty region to get 2 free houses out? But what if the Quarantia winner sneaks 2 advisors in there before that region scores? Should you position the advisor in a district that will have 2 elections before your advisor changes hands? That would be like 2 votes for the price of 1. The shifting advisors make the game so dynamic and interesting, and I feel like I did not highlight that enough in the video review. Just play the game, and you'll see what I mean!


RULES CLARIFICATIONS: Not a rules error, but I failed to explain that a player bidding only a zero token cannot qualify for 1st or 2nd place in votes... unless that zero token is combined with another voting token or with an advisor. Remember, the advisors always grant 1 vote. So if a player bid a zero token, but then managed to move an advisor into that district before the election, that player would get 1 vote from the advisor. Therefore, they could qualify for 1st or 2nd place.
