If you ever come into contact with a jellyfish, whether accidentally or out of curiosity, it doesn’t sting you right away. Instead, your touch triggers the jellyfish to defend itself. Inside its tentacles are thousands of tiny, arrow-like stingers, each tucked away in hollow tubes. When disturbed, these tubes open, allowing water to rush in and activate the stingers. They then shoot out like arrows, injecting venom that can cause excruciating pain—and in the case of a box jellyfish, this can even be deadly.
