The US patent for this elegant helicopter refers to a rotor with a bow-shaped spar to which the nose segments and trailing edge segments of an asymmetrical wing profile are hinged. As the rotor has a double-layer design, a diameter of around 10 m is sufficient for this transport helicopter, which is designed to carry twelve people. While the two horizontal rotor planes generate lift and are controlled by electric actuators so that the lift in the leading rotor half is equal to that in the trailing rotor half, the vertical cylindrical rotor plane is designed to generate thrust in the desired direction of flight. The great advantage of this invention is that it is not necessary to pivot the entire rotor blade, but only comparatively light wing flaps. This is advantageous in terms of energy consumption and also spares the passengers of this innovative aircraft the undesirable vibrations and shaking movements that are familiar from conventional helicopters.
