👉 Hey there, med students!
Today, I made an incredibly insightful video, that dives deep into the fascinating world of Telomeres and how they function in cells. I couldn't resist sharing all the amazing things I discussed with you!
So, let's get started and explore the inner workings of these remarkable Telomeres.
We'll encounter some familiar names like Telomerase, TRF1, and TRF2, as well as some exciting terms like POT1, RAP1, TIN2, and TPP1. Don't worry, I'll break it down for you in simple terms.
▬ 📌 Telomere ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Telomeres are specialized structures found at the ends of chromosomes. in eukaryotic cells, including human cells. They consist of repetitive DNA sequences and associated proteins that protect the genetic information during cell division and prevent the loss of important genetic material.
Telomeres play a crucial role in preserving genome stability and preventing cellular aging.
▬ 📌 Structure of Telomere ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Six important components of Telomeres are:
🟠 TRF1
🟠 TRF2
🟠 POT1
🟠 RAP1
🟠 TPP1
🟠 TIN2
👉 TRF1
Telomeric repeat-binding factor 1 and telomeric repeat-binding factor 2 bind to the TTAGGG sequences in the double-strand telomeric DNA.
👉 TRF2
Telomeric repeat-binding factor 1 and telomeric repeat-binding factor 2 attach to the TTAGGG sequences present in the double-stranded telomeric DNA.
👉 POT1
Protection of telomeres 1 binds to the sequences in single-strand form.
👉 TPP1
TERF1 interacts with nuclear factor 2 and tripeptidyl peptidase 1 protein keeping telomeric-repeat binding factor 1, telomeric-repeat binding factor 2, and protection of telomeres 1 together.
👉 TINS
TERF1 interacting nuclear factor 2 and tripeptidyl peptidase 1 proteins keep telomeric-repeat binding factor 1, telomeric-repeat binding factor 2, and protection of telomeres 1 together.
▬ 📌 Telomerase ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Telomeres is an enzyme that plays a critical role in maintaining the length of telomeres, the protective structures at the ends of chromosomes. It is a specialized reverse transcriptase enzyme, meaning it uses an RNA template to synthesize DNA.
As cells divide, the process of DNA replication causes a small portion of the telomere to be lost at the end of each chromosome. This is known as the "end-replication problem". Over time, this progressive shortening of telomeres can lead to cellular aging and eventual senescence (cellular death or inactivation) This superhero motor protein is specialized in anterograde transport.
Telomerase consists of:
📍 Protein
📍 RNA Template
👉 RNA Template
Telomerase RNA serves as a template for the synthesis of telomeric DNA during the action of the telomerase enzyme. Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein complex composed of two main components: the protein component (telomerase reverse transcriptase or TERT) and the RNA component (telomerase RNA, or TER).
