A look at Great Malvern railway station. Not much changed from its original design at the hands of Edmund Wallace Elmsley. Built by the Midland Railway in conjunction with the London North Western Railway in 1860. Lady Emily Foley, a lady of some note in the area, also had some influence in the development, having a private waiting room, now a tea room, built in with the main construction.
An unusual feature was a covered way built to allow patrons to get from the platform to the adjacent Railway Hotel without discomfort, in inclement weather. Known locally as 'The Worm' this is thought to be the first of its kind built anywhere in the UK. Passenger comfort was obviously a priority when the station was conceived, what looks like a carriage entrance in the main building, leads on to the platform, may have been for goods of course, although there isn't a canopy provided to allow one to alight without getting wet. The rear entrance/exit is covered as far as the carriage/car park.
Ornate topped columns support the overhead canopy above the platforms, each with an individual design at its head, again from the drawing board of the architect Edmund Elmsley. A truly wonderfully preserved old station transporting you back to Victorian building at its best, and well worth a browse anytime.
