This vegetarian hawker stall has such a long menu you can't find it elsewhere | Tang Leng Chay (東龍齋)

Established since 1976, Tang Leng Chay was the first stall offering vegetarian food at Circuit Road Food Centre. It may be small, but the menu covers such wide ranging food that can blow your mind. The 73-year-old stallowner, Mdm Cheong Ah Mui, shares that the menu has been built upon and expanded over the last 46 years to offer a wider variety. She used to sell pineapple drink on a trishaw with her husband prior to settling down at the current premise in 1971. The couple continued selling desserts before switching to vegetarian dishes.

The stall operates from 9am till after midnight at 2am. Why toil over such long hours? Mdm Cheong says this is to serve the hungry folks who work night shifts like taxi drivers as very few hawkers operate till late at night.

Over the years, many vegetarian stalls have sprouted at this food centre. Mr Tan, the elder son of Mdm Cheong, shares that there are a few temples near by. Business used to be brisk before the pandemic struck as devotees would drop by for food.
