On this trip, KrizAkoni and GrayJay meet up with Sweeps to fill in some sections of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania. KrizAkoni also took possession of the traveling TacoCat that Kevin from Atypicial Hiker turned loose on Senior Hiker 77. We started from the AT parking lot at PA Route 443 and hiked North to Route 501. We stayed overnight at the camp sites located across the trail from the William Penn Shelter. The AT parking near Swatara Gap and Swatara State Park is managed by Memorial Lake State Park – for overnight parking, they request that you leave your vehicle information with them. They can be reached at [email protected] or on their FaceBook Page: / swatarasp
Of special interest on this hike was the location of a water source about 0.3 miles down the hill from the Lookout viewpoint near Abandoned Power Line at AT mile 1188.7. This water source was mentioned in a number of threads on WhiteBlaze as having water when the other sources in the area are dried up. There are a few tent sites near the Lookout and a viable site at the bottom of the hill near the water. This source is 0.3 miles West off the AT and about 220’ descent. Although steep, the trial looks to be an old service road and is pretty easy. When you get to the bottom of the hill to the flat spot, continue a little farther straight off trail a few hundred feet to a small stream.
