Makuya Nature Reserve shares a fenceless border with the Kruger National Park near the Pafuri Gate in northern Limpopo Province. The Levuvhu river is the Reserve's life source and carves through an ancient sandstone landscape which is dotted with hundreds of baobab trees.
Makuya is home to a range of large and iconic mammal species such as Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard, Hippo and Hyeana. They are not abundant enough to guarentee seeing, but their presence certainly contributes to a hightened sense of awareness. Nevertheless, Makuya's appeal (for Lowveld Trails Co. at least) is the awe-inspiring landscape, which includes magical tributaries of the Levuvhu River, natural inland springs and extremely high levels of biological diversity. The permanent water also provides a unique and very special atmosphere.
