Deep in the hills of Massachusetts lies a hidden secret holding 412 billion gallons of water — and the story behind it changed the state forever.
The Quabbin Reservoir is one of the largest man-made public water supplies in the United States, providing drinking water to millions of people in Boston and surrounding communities. But beneath the calm surface of this massive reservoir are the remains of entire towns that once stood here.
In the early 1900s, Boston was growing rapidly and facing increasing concerns about water pollution and diseases like Typhoid fever. To secure a clean water supply, Massachusetts made a dramatic decision: flood the Swift River Valley and create the Quabbin Reservoir.
Four towns — Dana, Greenwich, Enfield, and Prescott — were permanently erased. Families were forced to relocate, cemeteries were moved, and entire villages disappeared beneath what is now a vast, protected wilderness.
Today the Quabbin Reservoir quietly supplies clean drinking water to Greater Boston while hiding one of the most dramatic and controversial infrastructure projects in American history.
In this video, we explore the lost towns, the public health crisis that led to the reservoir’s creation, and the massive engineering effort that placed 412 billion gallons of water over a valley that once held homes, schools, and entire communities.
Hidden history is everywhere — sometimes even beneath the water we drink.
