If you’re tired of plain water, then this video is for you. If you drink a lot of flavoured water, this video is also for you. I was recently told the food acids in the electrolyte tablets I have in my water everyday, have started eroding the enamel off my teeth. The tablets ensured I was drinking enough water everyday, because I’d never been a fan of plain water. So be very wary of flavoured water, whether it be in tablet, drop or pre bottled form with their clever marketing techniques. That’s why I’ve made my own flavoured water ice cubes, without sugar or acids. The dentist will not be making anymore money off me.
INGREDIENTS
500ml water
50g sweetener of your choice
Food flavours/flavourings of your choice
Food colours (optional)
Dissolve the sweetener in the water. You may need to bring the water to the boil to fully dissolve the sweetener, or to get rid of any nasties in the water.
It’s important you follow the dosage instructions of your food flavours as using too much can cause health issues and can also make foods or drinks taste too ‘chemically’. To work out how much flavour to use, decide how much water you’ll be flavouring each time, to make it easier I’d recommend making it the same. Work out the suggested flavour dosage for that amount of water. For each amount of water, add that much flavour for each ice cube cavity you’ll be filling to the sweetener syrup. Add a little colour to the flavour syrup if you wish. Pour the syrup into each of the ice cube cavities then freeze.
For example, I used a 10 cavity ice cube tray with each cavity holding 20ml. As I’d be using a 1.5 litre bottle each time, the dosage instructions for Lorann Oils Super Strength Flavors is 1/4-1/2 tsp per litre of water. So I could use up to 3/4 tsp for 1.5 litres of water. With 200mls of sweetener syrup for the ice cube tray, I can add up to 7.5 tsps of flavour to flavour 15 litres of water. As I don’t want to over flavour my water though, I only used 1.5 tsps of flavour for 200mls of syrup, this way I can use 2-3 ice cubes, using 2-3 different flavours in each bottle if I wish. Every brand of flavours can vary in strength, even the different flavours within the brand, so at first I’d recommend using less than the suggested dosage.
For an infusion, add crushed dried or fresh leaves, tea, roots, herbs, spices etc to the sweetener syrup. Strain through a fine mesh strainer before pouring into the ice cube trays.
When you’re ready for a flavoured water, just pop the ice cube/s into your water.
Tips and Info
*I’ve briefly explained food flavours/flavourings in the top pinned comment.
*You can buy flavours online, baking suppliers, specialty grocery stores and some supermarkets, depending where you live.
*Before making up the ice cubes, you can do a test with the amount of water you’ll be flavouring. Add the sweetener and flavour and when you’re happy with it, multiply the quantities for the amount of ice cubes you’ll be making.
*Use a sweetener you like as some can be overpowering in flavour, be bitter or have a weird aftertaste. Adjust the sweetness according to your tastebuds. I used 25g of stevia per 250ml of water. Some brands also have flavoured sweeteners with droppers which could be an easier option.
*As I said, there are a number of infusions you can do to that could help treat ailments. Ginger root, lemon balm, raspberry leaf, ginseng, valerian etc. But some may not make for a pleasant drinking experience so you may need to mix with a flavour or other infusion. Follow package directions for the infusions to optimise the health benefits. Keep in mind that some infusions may still contain some acid, even if they’re dried.
*While I went down the fruity flavours route, there are flavours like cola, root beer, cotton candy, marshmallow etc
*Always read the labels for important information. Some flavours and colours may contain sugars, thickeners and acids.
*Always remember to rinse your mouth out with plain water after consuming anything acidic or sugary.
