For those thrill seekers like me…. You MUST adventure in San Gil!!! Paragliding Chicamocha Canyon in the Northern Andes AND Class 5 white water rafting in Colombia were the most EXCITING, exhilarating experiences!!

Back in 2017, I spent 3 months exploring beautiful South America. One of the most memorable countries was Colombia! Colombia is VIBRANT. Full of colour & culture. AND ADVENTURE! The little town of San Gil is the adventure capital of Colombia… aka where I belong. Have you or anyone you know been to San Gil? I’d LOVE to hear about your experience down in the comments below!

I had two bucket list experiences I wanted to check off while visiting San Gil:

1. Paragliding over the Chicamocha Canyon in the Northern Andes Mountains
2. White water rafting in class 5 rapids of Rio Suarez.

The paragliding was EPIC! We booked with Parapenta Chicmocha, and they were great! We drove for about an hour from San Gil to the canyon, were given a detailed safety briefing, and then it was time to suit up! In order to get up into the air, you had to run while all strapped on and basically leap off the end of a cliff. Such a thrill! The flight time is about 20-25 minutes. Amazing experience!

Rafting on the Rio Suarez was also EPIC! We booked with Colombia Rafting Expeditions, and they took such great care of us. This river has class 5 rapids - the highest level a rapid can be classified until it is too dangerous and injury becomes likely! After arriving at the river, we were given a detailed safety briefing, practiced some rescue skills on the water (because apparently man overboard is a common occurrence), and then it was go time. This was an adrenaline pumping experience to say the LEAST - the rapids were insane. After 2 hours on the water, we disembarked and had a nice lunch on the riverbank with a few local puppies and a celebratory beer!

All in all, both experiences were WELL worth it! If you’re an adrenaline junkie like me, you MUST put San Gil, Colombia on your adventure bucket list! You’d be crazy not to!

*Pro Tip: wait to book until you arrive! This is true for most adventures while traveling. Online prices will generally be way higher!*
