The Safety Bike Boom of the 1890's (Victorian Cycling History)

Chrisman and her husband Gabriel (both experts on Victorian era history) discuss the safety bike boom of the 1890's. They talk about why safety bikes replaced the older Ordinary (high wheel) bicycles in popularity, how women's bikes were different from men's bikes in this period (drop frames vs. diamond frames, skirt guards, fenders, chain guards…) and the various implications of the bike boom for society at large. (Gabriel has over two decades of experience in the bike industry.) Footage includes clips of Gabriel building 1890's style safety bikes, both Gabriel and Sarah riding safety bikes, Gabriel riding an 1880's Ordinary (high wheel) bicycle, Sarah riding an 1880's style Coventry Rotary Roadster ladies' high wheel tricycle, both Chrismans riding their antique 1897 Remington tandem bicycle, and antique Victorian bicycle advertisements from the Chrismans' private archive.
