Ok, we've had a few beers and so the video camera comes out for a repeat of yesterday's recording session, this time with a yirdaki made by the man himself!
This is a very exciting stick. Although not a large instrument and thus lacking that boomy bass of yirdaki of the likes of Djalu Gurruwiwi, this is nonetheless a gem of a yirdaki with very fine acoustic structure and balance, good depth, utterly uncomplicated transition from fundamental to overtone note, strong backpressure, and excellent acoustic elasticity in the air column.
This is the sort of instrument cherished by today's generation of yirdaki players in eastern Arnhem Land. Fast, percussive, responsive, alive... Construction is simple with hardly any work done to the yirdaki except the stripping of bark, a little bit of shaping, and a little cleaning of the bell and mouthpiece ends. The mouthpiece is particularly comfortable and just the right size and shape - great for firing off overtone notes in rapid succession at neck-breaking speed.
Laga classifies this yirdaki as a combination of "lead" and "rhythm".
Laga doesn't make instruments for sale. The few he makes are used personally or bought or borrowed by the likes of Dhapan, Djamanggi, Ngalkanbuy et. al.
