Gun enthusiasts attended a gun show in Belleville, Illinois on Saturday (January 14), just days after the state passed a ban on the sale of many common kinds of semiautomatic guns.

Rifles, various types of ammunition, shooting targets, and pistols were sold at the fair which was attended by locals, including many military veterans.

Attendee Michael Strien called the recent ban "unconstitutional" while his friend and owner of Ed's Guns, Ed Miller, said he was hoping it wouldn't be enforced.

Meanwhile, William Hanes, also attending the show, said people in the state are expecting the Illinois State Rifle Association will go to court and get the ban overturned.

Illinois has banned the sale of many common kinds of semiautomatic guns with immediate effect in response to a massacre at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park last year and other mass shootings.

The new law, which Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed on Tuesday (January 10) evening, bans selling many kinds of weapons that automatically load the next bullet after a shot, including semiautomatic rifles and pistols with detachable magazines. The law lists dozens of popular gun brands made by U.S. gun makers.

Rifles that hold more than 10 bullets and pistols that hold more than 15 are also banned, as are rapid-fire attachments and .50-caliber guns. People who already own such weapons will be able to keep them but must register them with state police.

Eight other states and the District of Columbia have already enacted similar bans. The White House said on Wednesday (January 11) President Joe Biden wants other states to join Illinois in banning assault weapons.

Gun-owners rights groups say the bans violate the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment "right to keep and bear arms" and that many law-abiding Americans have such guns for self-defense, hunting and for sport.
