Travelled east, with Loki and kids at his side,
Through the lands of giants and forest vast,
They trod and trod till the day did pass,
And when the night did fall, shelter they sought,
In a great abode by earthquakes rocked.

They trembled in fear,
Thor held his hammer near,
But the abode was naught but a glove,
To the giant Skrýmir, it belonged,
Through the night he had snored,
And the earthquakes he'd caused.

And when the giant slept,
Thor in anger would wake,

And the giant would open his eyes,
And ask: "Did a leaf land on my side?"

And when thunder struck thrice,
Skrýmir woke and gave him advice:
"In that castle, I tell, be humble there,
To Útgarða-Loki and his thanes you cannot compare."
And so he had said, and then abruptly left,
And left the four bereft.

At midday, they faced that castle most great,
And even Thor's strength could not open the gates.
They squeezed between the bars, our heroes so small,
They walked through the castle and to the great hall.
Where the castle's king in his great seat did sit,
"No visitors allowed, lest you can perform a feat!"

And Loki first to speak—bragged how fast he can eat,
And with Logi he'd compete to eat a trencher full of meat.
And he'd eaten all there was, yet still he had lost,
"What can the young man do?" the giant king asked,
And Þjálfi said, that he shall try to race,
And so ’gainst Hugi he'd be put to the test.

Three times they raced, and three times he failed,
Though he did race well, but now's the time
For the Thunderer's test.

And so the Thunderer did drink, in a drinking contest,
But after three gulps, he would fail the first test.
Then he'd lift the cat, but only raise one paw,
And a fight he would demand, to fight someone in this hall,
And so old Elli he'd face, and the two would wrestle,
But only harder it became, the more he did struggle.

And so Thor did fail,
Fail despite his struggles,
Yet the very next day,
The giant would appear and reveal his falsehoods.

"I shall tell you the truth, now you are out of my castle,
You shall never enter it again, else you bring us disaster.
I cast my delusion, twas I you met in the forest,
Three valleys you did make, when you struck with your hammer.
And then you drank the sea, and raised its mighty serpent,
You fought against Old Age, and was nearly triumphant."

O that was the truth—the tests had been illusions,
Wildfire, Thought, Old Age—to fight them is delusion.
Yet they nearly did prevail, and so nearly did unveil.
Enraged Thor his hammer raised.
And so in great fear,
The giant and castle disappeared.
