හෝර්ටන් තැනිතලාව ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ මධ්‍යම උස්බිම් ප්‍රදේශයේ, නුවරඑළිය දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ පිහිටි වැදගත් ජාතික උද්‍යානයකි. මුහුදු මට්ටමින් මීටර් 2,100ට වැඩි උසකින් යුත් මෙය 1988 දී ජාතික උද්‍යානයක් ලෙස ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කර ඇති අතර යුනෙස්කෝ ලෝක උරුම ස්ථානයක් ලෙසද පිළිගැනේ. ශීතල හා මීදුම් සහිත වායුගෝලය, පුළුල් තණබිම් සහ මොන්ටේන් වනාන්තර මෙහි විශේෂ ලක්ෂණ වේ. මහවැලි, කැලනි හා වළවේ ගංගා මෙහි සිට ආරම්භ වීම නිසා ජල සම්පත් රැකගැනීමට මෙය අතිශය වැදගත්ය.

මෙහි සත්ව ජීව විවිධත්වය ඉහළය. ශ්‍රී ලංකා සම්බර් මුවා වඩාත් ප්‍රසිද්ධ සත්වයෙකි. එමෙන්ම ශ්‍රී ලංකා දිවියා, වල් ඌරා, කඳු වඳුරා වැනි සතුන් ද මෙහි දක්නට ලැබේ. පක්ෂීන් අතර ශ්‍රී ලංකා වුඩ් පිජන්, බ්ලූ මැග්පයි, විස්ලින් ත්‍රෂ් වැනි ආවේනික විශේෂ ඇත. ශාක අතර රෝඩොඩෙන්ඩ්‍රෝන්, විවිධ ඕකිඩ් වර්ග සහ නෙපෙන්තස් (Pitcher plant) වැනි ආවේනික ශාක දක්නට ලැබේ.

“වර්ල්ඩ්ස් එන්ඩ්” සහ බේකර්ස් දියඇල්ල මෙහි ප්‍රසිද්ධ සංචාරක ආකර්ෂණ වේ. කෙසේ වෙතත්, කසළ දැමීම, අවිධිමත් සංචාරක ක්‍රියා සහ දේශගුණික විපර්‍යස් වැනි කරුණු මෙම පරිසරයට තර්ජනයක් වේ. එබැවින් හෝර්ටන් තැනිතලාව ආරක්ෂා කිරීම අපගේ වගකීමකි. එය ජීව විවිධත්වය හා ජල සම්පත් රැකගැනීමට ඉතා වැදගත් ජාතික උරුමයකි.

Horton Plains is an important national park located in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, in the Nuwara Eliya District. Situated over 2,100 meters above sea level, it was declared a national park in 1988 and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is known for its cool, misty climate, wide grasslands, and montane cloud forests. It is also very important as the source of three major rivers: the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe, making it vital for water conservation in Sri Lanka.

The park has rich biodiversity. The Sri Lankan Sambar deer is the most commonly seen animal. Other animals include the Sri Lankan leopard, wild boar, and purple-faced langur. Endemic birds such as the Sri Lanka wood pigeon, blue magpie, and whistling thrush can also be found here. The plant life includes endemic species like Rhododendron, orchids, and the pitcher plant.

Famous attractions such as World’s End and Baker’s Falls bring many visitors. However, threats like littering, improper tourism, and climate change affect this fragile ecosystem. Therefore, conserving Horton Plains is essential to protect biodiversity, water resources, and Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.
