"We can't prevent all injuries from progressing. We can certainly mitigate the effects of them and really dial in specific care relative to the specific injury."
Greenwich hospital offered its first in a series of tuition-free mini-medical seminars Wednesday night to introduce local residents to the world of human health.
Orthopedic sports medicine surgeon Paul Sethi educated the crowd on the latest research and surgical procedures for osteoarthritis, a joint condition involving the wear, tear, and loss of cartilage.
"Sometimes that cartilage breaks down like a pothole on the street, and when you get many of those potholes or too many of those potholes this begins to develop osteoarthritis. When all that teflon is worn away, you can have bone against bone and this is really the end of osteoarthritis."
He says individuals who are overweight and have had previous injures are most at risk, but those with metabolic disorders should also be aware.
"The second subset are those individuals who've had metabolic disorders rheumatoid arthritis or autoimmune disorders where the body can break down into the cartilage absent and injuries."
According to the Center for Disease Control Osteoarthritis affects over 30 percent of the U.S. population over age 65. Sethi says symptoms include pain and swelling.
"The sensation of catching or locking or something in your knee is giving way. These are all indicators."
He says although there supplements designed to strengthen cartilage, the best way to prevent the osteoarthritis is regular exercise.
"There's lots of arguments on whether or not you can take certain supplements such as glucosamine to take away or prevent arthritis. I don't know if that's really true that eating cartilage will make your cartilage grow thicker, but maintaining an ideal body weight with regular exercise and avoiding most traumatic things is probably the most ideal way."
