The Battle of Philippi was fought in 42 BCE between the forces of Mark Antony and Octavian (later known as Augustus) on one side, and the forces of Julius Caesar's assassins, Brutus and Cassius, on the other. The battle took place near Philippi in eastern Macedonia and was the final conflict in the series of civil wars that had torn Rome apart since the death of Julius Caesar. The forces of Antony and Octavian emerged victorious, and Brutus and Cassius both committed suicide shortly afterward. The Battle of Philippi marked a turning point in Roman history, as it ensured the eventual rise to power of Octavian, who would become the first Roman Emperor and the end of the Roman Republic.
