Please join us for this free and public performance series, which will bring some very exciting and compelling artists right to your own screens at home. Join writer and storyteller and Alice Munro Chair in Creativity Ivan Coyote as they welcome some of their favourite performers and makers to the virtual stage to share their songs and stories with you in this intimate and compelling investigation into the creative hearts of some of the finest contemporary voices working in their fields today.

Biographies:

Christine Fellows finds music in sounds we tend to take for granted: the voices of the people we love, the sounds of the spaces we move through as part of our daily lives. Although she identifies primarily as a songwriter and performer, her practice includes poetry, spoken word, paper collage, stop-motion video, sound design, and composition.

Fellows is based in Winnipeg, Treaty One Territory, where she collaborates with artists from all disciplines to create and produce performance works and recordings. In 2018, she released her seventh solo album Roses on the Vine. In 2019-20, she created scores and sound design for theatre (Prairie Theatre Exchange), film (National Film Board of Canada; Diana Thorneycroft), dance (independent choreographers Lesandra Dodson and Jasmine Ellis), and spoken word (Jonathan Goldstein’s podcast, Heavyweight).

For the majority of his 25 years as a practicing songwriter, John K. Samson fronted internationally beloved Winnipeg band The Weakerthans, for whom he wrote, recorded, and toured five full-length recordings. In 2010 he began writing and recording under his own name. John spent much of the last few years touring internationally in support of his second full-length solo record, Winter Wheat (Epitaph/Anti Records, 2016).

For several years, he participated in the Open Circle prison visitation program, and helped establish and facilitate a chapter of Book Clubs for Inmates at Stony Mountain Institution. He is currently working with Winnipeg community groups Millennium for All and Budget for All Winnipeg, advocating for municipal funding and support for essential community programs and services.

John and Christine have collaborated on several scores for dance and film, have taught, mentored and undertaken several co-residencies, and often perform and record music together.
