First introduced to American fly tiers in Reuben Cross's "Tying American Trout Lures," the Carrot Nymph is an interesting general attractor nymph. While at times it has been very popular, it has not been tied or fished as often in recent years. A shame, as this classic nymph pattern can be very effective in all trout waters.
Hook: #12-14, 2X long nymph
Thread: Black (or orange)
Tail: Black hackle fibers
Body: Orange silk (or synthetic) floss
Thorax: Black chenille
Hackle: Brown or black hen hackle
This pattern can be found in David Klausmeyer's "Favorite Flies" published in 2020, and available here: https://amzn.to/3oeSNMa
Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.
