Perched above the Kinzig Valley in the Black Forest region, Ortenberg Castle (Schloss Ortenberg) is one of the most striking castles in southern Germany. Originally built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 19th century in a romantic Neo-Gothic style, it overlooks the town of Ortenberg and endless vineyards.
Once a medieval stronghold, today it's partly a youth hostel, partly a lookout point, and entirely a hidden gem. From its towers, you can see across the Rhine Valley all the way to France on a clear day. A must-see spot if you're exploring the Ortenau wine route or nearby towns like Offenburg and Gengenbach.
