Nearly 70% of Spain is empty because of severe rural depopulation. Over the past few decades, people have migrated from villages to cities seeking better jobs and education, leaving behind vast stretches of countryside abandoned. Harsh climates, limited infrastructure, and aging populations have turned much of inland Spain into a “deserted heartland,” often called “La España vacía” (The Empty Spain).
