"MGM Records is FIRST! with a single stereo disk" exclaimed the promotional-only picture sleeve, promoting the new stereo audio format on 45 RPM singles, in 1958. Though there may have been an earlier claim on a stereo 45 from Bel Canto Records, this was the first one to be mass released on a national level. The promotional 45 of this release (and mind you, no radio station had stereo ability at the time), was on a blue label and retained the regular stock release number of K12706. When it got a commercial release, MGM gave it a new stereo catalog number, SK50109.
On the Billboard charts, this would be the last top 20 hit for Joni, though she kept recording and touring until the mid 1960's, when she took a near-30 year long hiatus from recording and touring to take care of her ill husband, Anthony "Tony" Acquaviva, who eventually passed away in 1986. She began touring again in the mid 1990's and met her second husband, Bennie Schriever, who she was married to from 1997 until his passing in 2005.
We lost Joni James in February of 2022, at the age of 91.
The audio and visual aspects of this video were both supplied to me from a friend with a request that I post them, and I am very glad to, as this record is a favorite of mine (though in my own collection, I only have the mono 45 release). The recording here sounds like your typical MGM two-track stereo of the day, and I actually like it. Of the three domestic CD's to contain the song, two of them have it in mono and one is rechanneled, leaving the stereo mix to be very hard to find in the digital era. Thanks to MW for supplying this!
