ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
The three musicians had already crossed paths in the group Quatuor IXI; the Ceccaldi brothers bringing with them a whole range of diverse experiences (KUTU, Le Tri Collectif and Grand Orchestre du Tricot to name a few), and the clarinettist YOM with, among other projects, an album titled Le Silence de l’exode. They invite us on a transcendental journey, a practical exercise in the rhythm of silence that leads toward pure emotion – and it’s no exaggeration to say that the project succeeds musically. There’s a sense of the sacred here, without being religious, even if Sufi thought exerts an influence. The musicians are dressed in black, and Yom sits cross-legged in monk-like fashion, allowing himself to drift into meditative outpourings.

Yom’s compositions follow one after another without interruption, built around minor-key melodies. The concert begins strangely, with cello notes that resonate like heartbeats before the violinist enters as if he were playing an oud. In Yom’s playing, you can pick up everything from klezmer influences to wafts of the Middle East and Asia. It’s meditative, sometimes solemn, and often playful; at times, you brush up against a kind of dervish trance before slipping into some sharp improvisations (“Le Rythme du Silence,” the final track played as an encore, attests to this). To summarize: Yom never seems to run out of breath, and the Ceccaldi brothers play with such intensity that they take the strings right to their limits.
