Long before ski resorts and winter tourism, the Sierra Nevada was an impassable winter barrier.
In this episode of Sierra Stories, we explore the life of John “Snowshoe” Thompson, widely regarded as the father of Western skiing.
Drawn west by the California Gold Rush, Thompson did not find fortune in the mines. Instead, he introduced long-distance skiing to the Sierra Nevada as a practical way to move through winter. Using wooden skis and knowledge from Norway, he crossed nearly ninety miles of mountain wilderness to deliver mail, medicine, and hope to isolated communities.
His journeys changed how people understood winter in the American West and helped shape the ski culture that exists today.
Thank you for watching Sierra Stories, where history lives in the mountains.
